'Earmark 1 pc fuel cess for road safety'

The government on Thursday said that a high-level committee on road safety has recommended one per cent of the total proceeds of cess on petrol and diesel be utilised under the Road Safety Fund.

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday said that a high-level committee on road safety has recommended one per cent of the total proceeds of cess on petrol and diesel be utilised under the Road Safety Fund.
The Committee headed by former Transport Secretary S Sundar had also suggested that one per cent of the money earned as cess on petrol and diesel be earmarked under the Fund.
Views of states and Union Territories have been sought in this connection, Minister for Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu told the Rajya Sabha in reply to a query.
