Dubai Port concerned over strikes; fears delay at ICTT
The Dubai Port World expresses concern over frequent strikes at the Rajiv Gandhi Container terminal and fears delay in commencement of construction work at the Rs 1,200 crore ICTT.
"We fear about the viability of ICTT following the frequent strikes in the port," Dubai Port World (Indian Sub continent) Managing Director Ganesh Raj said in a letter to Cochin Port Trust Chairman N Ramachandran.
The letter was sent yesterday after port workers stayed away from duty for two days recently. In the last 20 months, there have been about 14 strikes affecting operations at the Rajiv Gandhi Terminal.
Only a small group of persons are creating problems in the port and would be dealt with strictly and strongly. The Vallarpadam terminal work would begin as schedule, Ramachandran said.
Dubai Port World, however, is worried about the frequent strikes affecting its productivity and profitability.
Ramachandran said the state government has been informed about the strikes and has been requested to intervene in the matter. A majority of the port workers do not want strike.
The port has taken a decision of zero tolerance towards those who resort to illegal measures to stop work, he said.
The Dubai Port World has been assured that Cochin port would ensure that appropriate industrial climate is maintained and there is no delay in the commencement of the project, he said adding that there is no reason for any concern.
