DP World introduces automated gates at Nava Sheva

MUMBAI: Dubai's DP World has introduced "automated gates" at its terminal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust or Nava Sheva that will drastically cut the dwelling time for transporters and truckers.

The company is also working on remote-controlled crane operations that will likely add to ease of doing business at India's largest container-handling port.

"The current waiting time spent at the gates is 10 minutes. Soon it will be 10 seconds," senior vice president Anil Singh told ET in an interview.

Powered by the Optical Character Recognition technology, the tool has registered the details of 8,000 trucks that ply in and out of the port. The pre-registered information makes it easier to screen the vehicles as the come in, thus cutting down turnaround time.

The terminal is equipped with remote-operated quay cranes capable to handle the next-generation large size vessels. These cranes also enable the terminal to log higher productivity and operational efficiencies with better safety standards, said a statement from the company.
