Delhi Metro to help save fuel worth Rs 20k cr by 2020: Survey
With fuel prices touching the roof, the Delhi Metro will prove to be a blessing as fuel worth Rs 20,000 crore could be saved by 2020
"Delhi Metro, since its inception, has helped reduction of over five lakh vehicles on city roads, leading to fuel savings of Rs 8,000 crore during 2010-11, Assocham study said.
Over two lakh office goers travel back and forth via Metro in Delhi and use their cars to move from home to station and back on weekdays, it said.
"The reduction in the number of private vehicles and buses on roads has been considerable since the introduction of Metro. The withdrawal in number of cars and jeeps has increased to about 80,000 by 2010-11 from 50,586 in 2005-06 and is projected to reach 238,757 in 2015-16," Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said.
The study said substantial energy and time has been saved since lakhs of commuters gave up motorised personal and private transport and opted for Metro.
It said as the Metro moves toward phase three completion by 2015, more and more people from cities like Meerut,Sonepat, Faridabad and Alwar would be encouraged to come to Delhi by Metro.
The oil companies recently hiked petrol prices by Rs 3.14 per litre. This is the second hike in four months. Oil companies had last hiked petrol price by Rs 5 per litre on May 15.
