Delhi Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory after heavy congestion was reported on the Barapulla Phase-III Elevated Road towards Barapulla and Ring Road from Noida Link Road and Mayur Vihar Phase-I. The traffic police said the congestion was not being reflected on Google Maps, meaning commuters continued to take the affected route, adding to the traffic bottleneck at Barapulla Junction.

Barapulla Phase-III traffic update: What Delhi Police said

In a post on X, Delhi Traffic Police said, “Congestion on Barapulla Phase-III is not being reflected on Google Maps, due to which commuters are continuing to use this route. This has resulted in heavy traffic and a bottleneck at Barapulla Junction”.

Traffic towards Barapulla and Ring Road was reported to be heavy and slow-moving. To manage the situation, traffic from Barapulla Phase-III was being diverted towards NH-24/DND.

Commuters travelling through the area were advised to avoid the affected stretch and use alternate routes via NH-24/DND. Traffic personnel were also deployed at the spot to regulate vehicle movement.

Why is Barapulla congestion not showing on Google Maps?

One possible reason could be poor mobile connectivity along parts of the elevated stretch. If location data from commuters' phones is limited or interrupted, traffic-mapping services may have less real-time movement data to assess congestion accurately.

However, the absence of a traffic update on Google Maps does not necessarily mean mobile signals are unavailable across the entire stretch. Traffic information on mapping platforms is generated using multiple data sources and algorithms, so congestion can sometimes take time to appear.

Why is Barapulla Phase-III facing heavy traffic?

The congestion is also linked to the way traffic from multiple stretches converges at the Barapulla network. Delhi Traffic Police had earlier explained that traffic from around eight to nine lanes was converging into just three lanes at one point on the older flyover stretch, creating a bottleneck.

The Old Barapullah Flyover has three lanes, while the newly opened Phase-III flyover on the Mayur Vihar side, the Sarai Kale Khan loop and the DND loop each have around three lanes.

The convergence of these multiple roadways into a narrower stretch can lead to a sharp increase in traffic density and slow down vehicle movement.

Barapulla traffic jam: Ambulance also caught in congestion

The traffic situation had earlier drawn attention after a journalist posted about a nearly 2-km-long traffic jam from Mayur Vihar towards AIIMS.

The post also claimed that an ambulance had become stuck in the congestion, highlighting concerns over the impact of the bottleneck on emergency and regular traffic.

Barapulla Phase-III was expected to ease Delhi traffic

The traffic snarls have emerged after the opening of Barapulla Phase-III, which was developed to improve connectivity between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan and facilitate smoother movement towards central Delhi.

While the new elevated road has added another route for commuters, the convergence of traffic from several connected stretches appears to be creating pressure at key junctions.

For now, Delhi Traffic Police has advised commuters to avoid the congested stretch and use NH-24/DND as an alternative route.
