FASTag users can now switch banks without changing tag as Nitin Gadkari launches OneTag
In a significant move for drivers, the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled the OneTag system that allows motorists to conveniently change their FASTag issuing banks without needing new physical tags. Users can maintain their current tag and ...
Launched at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, OneTag will allow users to move their existing National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag from one issuer bank to another while retaining the same physical tag, Tag ID and vehicle registration number.

The system has been jointly developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Currently, a FASTag user who wants to change the issuer bank must close the existing tag account, complete a fresh onboarding process and obtain another physical FASTag. OneTag is designed to remove that requirement by making the existing tag portable between participating issuers.
The portability facility will be offered through NHAI's Rajmargyatra mobile application. Users seeking to switch banks will have to undergo eligibility checks and secure verification, provide consent and select their preferred issuer before completing onboarding with the new bank.
The existing issuer will remain responsible for customer verification and for settling matters related to the previous wallet, including refunds and pending transactions. Once portability is successfully completed, the new issuer will take over the customer's FASTag services.
NPCI will provide the central technology infrastructure for the system, facilitate the portability process and update issuer details within the NETC network.
The change will not require toll plazas to adopt a new transaction process. Toll acquirers and plazas will continue processing FASTag payments through the existing NETC framework.

Apart from making it easier for motorists to change FASTag providers, the government expects the portability system to reduce the number of physical tags that need to be produced, dispatched and reissued.
FASTag has a penetration rate of more than 98% in India, according to the release. Around 13 crore NETC FASTags have been issued so far, of which approximately 6 crore are active.
FASTag uses radio-frequency identification technology to automatically deduct toll charges from a linked account when a vehicle passes through an enabled toll plaza. The NETC system, operated by NPCI, allows FASTags issued by different participating banks and payment providers to work across the country's toll network.
With OneTag, that interoperability will now extend to the issuer itself, allowing motorists to change their FASTag provider without changing the tag already attached to their vehicle.
