The 1.4-km double-decker structure will run between Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura Metro stations, passing through Karawal Nagar, Ghonda and Brijpuri junction on Mangal Pandey Marg. The project is being executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). An MoU between the Public Works Department (PWD) and DMRC for the project was signed on February 24, 2021.

Unlike conventional projects where road flyovers and Metro viaducts are built separately, the Karawal Nagar project integrates the two into a single double-decker structure. The arrangement is designed to make better use of the available space while providing an elevated route for both road traffic and Metro services. The project's original estimated cost was Rs 220 crore, which has since been revised to Rs 291 crore.

Karawal Nagar project faced delays over approvals
The project faced delays in 2023 after certain components could not proceed due to pending approvals. The Delhi government has now approved the revised project cost, with construction progressing towards the December 2026 completion target. With most of the civil work already completed, the project is expected to move closer to becoming operational once the remaining construction and associated works are finished.

The government expects the elevated structure to significantly ease congestion on the existing road. It estimates that around 65-70% of traffic could shift to the elevated route, leaving the surface road primarily for local traffic. The project is also expected to help create a signal-free stretch from Gokulpuri to Signature Bridge via Khajuri Khas, potentially reducing delays for commuters travelling through the congested northeast Delhi corridor.
