World's highest railway station in Ladakh at 17,244 feet: India planning a Rs 1.3 lakh crore railway line that will break China's record

India is planning one of its most ambitious railway infrastructure projects in the Himalayas that could have world's highest railway station. The proposed railway line connecting Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh to Leh in Ladakh could not only bring trains closer to the country's northern frontier but also create a world record. The 489-km Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line is expected to feature a station at an altitude of approximately 5,256 metres (17,244 feet) above sea level. If constructed at the proposed elevation, it would become the world's highest railway station, surpassing China's Tanggula railway station, which currently holds the record at around 5,068 metres. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 1.31 lakh crore, according to its Detailed Project Report (DPR). The railway ministry has completed the survey and prepared the DPR, however, the project is yet to receive the necessary construction approval.

India's proposed railway station could break China's world record

The biggest attraction of the proposed railway corridor is the station planned beneath the Tanglang La mountain pass in Ladakh, a TOI report stated. At an elevation of around 5,256 metres, the proposed station would be significantly higher than China's Tanggula railway station on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The Chinese station is situated at approximately 5,068 metres above sea level and is currently recognised as the world's highest railway station. The proposed Indian station would exceed that elevation by nearly 188 metres.

Tanglang La is already a challenging high-altitude location on the Manali-Leh highway. However, establishing a railway station in this mountainous region would require far more complex engineering and infrastructure than building a motorable road.

489-km railway line will pass through 270 km of tunnels

China's Tanggula railway station on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is currently the world's highest station.

The Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway corridor is expected to cover approximately 489 km, connecting several important towns and settlements across Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The proposed route will pass through Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi, Manali, Sissu, Darcha, Keylong, Sarchu, Pang, Rumtse, Upshi and Kharu before reaching Leh.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project is the extensive tunnelling required to cross the Himalayan mountain range. According to the project details, around 270 km of the proposed railway line will run through tunnels. This means more than half of the entire corridor could be underground.

The construction teams will have to deal with difficult geological formations, extreme weather, steep mountain gradients and the engineering complications associated with working at high altitudes. These conditions make the project considerably more challenging than conventional railway expansion.

Why is India's Ladakh railway project important?

The proposed railway line is not just about reducing travel time or bringing a new transport option to Ladakh. It also has considerable strategic importance. Leh and the surrounding areas are strategically important for India's defence infrastructure. At present, connectivity to the region largely depends on road and air transport.

The Manali-Leh highway is an important route, but heavy snowfall and harsh weather can disrupt movement, particularly during winter. Air connectivity provides another option, although it cannot replace the capacity of a large railway corridor for transporting passengers and goods.

A railway connection could provide an additional transportation route for essential supplies, equipment and passengers. It could also strengthen logistical connectivity to a strategically sensitive region. The project's identification as a strategic railway corridor by the Ministry of Defence underlines its importance beyond civilian transportation.

When will the Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line be completed?

Despite its ambitious scale, the proposed railway line is still at the planning stage. The railway ministry has completed the survey and prepared the Detailed Project Report, with the estimated project cost pegged at around Rs 1.31 lakh crore. However, preparation of a DPR does not automatically mean that construction has been approved. There is also no confirmed completion deadline for the entire corridor.

The project will require significant financial investment, detailed engineering assessments and clearances before construction can move forward. There are also challenges involving other railway projects in Himachal Pradesh that could influence the broader expansion of rail connectivity towards Ladakh.

Land acquisition hurdles pose challenges for Himalayan railway expansion

The proposed Ladakh railway corridor is not the only major railway project facing implementation challenges in Himachal Pradesh. The 63-km Bhanupali-Bilaspur-Beri railway line is another important infrastructure project expected to strengthen railway connectivity in the state and support the broader expansion towards Ladakh.

However, the project has encountered delays involving land acquisition and the state's financial contribution. In October 2026, the Himachal Pradesh High Court quashed the preliminary land acquisition notification for the project. The court found that the government had not followed the statutory requirements for extending the deadline to issue the land acquisition declaration.

For the Bilaspur-Manali-Leh corridor, the difficulties could be considerably greater because of its longer route, extensive tunnelling requirements and challenging Himalayan geography. If the project eventually receives approval and is completed as proposed, it could transform connectivity to Ladakh while giving India a new place in global railway history.
