Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday announced the Cabinet’s approval for the extension of the existing North–South corridor of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) from GIFT City to Shahpur.

The proposed stretch will be 3.33 km long and will include three elevated stations. The project, estimated to cost Rs 1,067.35 crore, is scheduled for completion in approximately four years.

According to the government, the extended corridor is expected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, rising to nearly 58,059 passengers by 2041.

Boost to Ahmedabad–GIFT Connectivity

The extension aims to strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, a growing hub for financial and commercial activity. Several multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial centres located along the route are expected to benefit directly.

The project will also ease travel for daily commuters moving between Ahmedabad and GIFT City for business, employment and education, enhancing network integration and overall passenger convenience.

Employment Generation

The construction phase is expected to generate around 1,000 jobs, while approximately 250 people will be employed in operations and maintenance post-completion. The government said the project would also create significant indirect employment opportunities.

GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, will implement the project.

Expanding Metro Network

The Gujarat Metro currently comprises the 68.28-km Ahmedabad Metro Phase I and Phase II, with a total of 53 operational stations.

Phase I, connecting APMC to Motera Stadium (North–South Corridor) and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam (East–West Corridor), has been operational since September 2022. Phase II, linking Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City, became operational in January 2026.

The system currently records a daily ridership of approximately 1.6 lakh passengers.

Cabinet Clears Infrastructure Projects Worth Rs 12,236 Crore

In addition to the metro expansion, the Union Cabinet approved a series of infrastructure and policy decisions with a total financial outlay of Rs 12,236 crore.

Announcing the decisions, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Cabinet cleared the doubling of the Gondia–Jabalpur rail line at an estimated cost of Rs 5,236 crore. It also sanctioned the third and fourth rail line project between Punarkh and Kiul, involving an investment of Rs 2,668 crore.

Further, the Cabinet approved the construction of the third and fourth line between Gamharia and Chandil, with a project cost of Rs 1,168 crore.

Aviation and Policy Decisions

To boost aviation infrastructure, the Cabinet also approved a new integrated airport terminal at Srinagar, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 1,667 crore.

Among policy decisions, the Cabinet cleared measures related to power sector reforms and approved the change of name of the state from Kerala to Keralam.

The approvals underscore the Centre’s continued focus on expanding rail, metro and aviation infrastructure while advancing broader policy reforms.
