The completion of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network could change that equation.
With the commissioning of the remaining sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, India now has a fully operational 2,843-km dedicated freight network. The project is expected to speed up the movement of goods, improve freight reliability and release capacity on conventional railway routes used by both passenger and freight trains.

India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor network: What is now operational?
The DFC network comprises two major corridors. The 1,506-km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor runs between Dadri in Uttar Pradesh and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Maharashtra. The 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor connects New Sahnewal in Punjab with New Sonnagar in Bihar.The final three sections of the Western DFC, covering around 326 km, were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week. The sections were developed at a cost of more than Rs 20,700 crore.
With this, the entire 2,843-km DFC network has become operational.

Why did India need dedicated freight corridors?
The idea behind the DFC was driven by a problem: India's busiest railway routes were running close to or beyond their designed capacity.The existing Howrah-Delhi and Mumbai-Delhi trunk routes had been operating at around 115-150% of capacity, with freight trains competing with passenger services for the same railway paths.
The DFC separates freight traffic from passenger operations by providing dedicated tracks for goods trains.
This not only gives freight trains additional capacity but also allows conventional railway lines to accommodate more passenger and freight services.
Freight trains can now move much faster
One of the biggest advantages of the dedicated corridors is the improvement in freight train speeds.Average freight train speeds on the DFC network are reportedly above 50 kmph, roughly twice the average speed recorded on non-DFC routes.
More than 400 freight trains operate on the two corridors every day.
The Western DFC is particularly important for containerised cargo, connecting northern India's industrial and consumption centres with ports on the western coast. The Eastern DFC, meanwhile, handles significant volumes of bulk commodities originating from India's mineral-rich eastern region.
The ability to operate double-stack container trains is another major advantage. Carrying two layers of containers on a single train allows more cargo to be transported in one movement, improving rail freight productivity.
How DFC can help passenger trains
The benefits of the project are not restricted to freight.By moving goods trains onto dedicated tracks, the DFC releases capacity on the existing railway network. This could allow Indian Railways to operate additional passenger services and improve train speeds on routes where freight and passenger trains previously shared limited track capacity.
The corridors could therefore have an indirect impact on passenger journeys, even though their primary purpose is freight movement.
DFC could make India's logistics network more efficient
The bigger significance of the project lies in its potential impact on India's logistics chain.The DFC connects industrial centres, manufacturing clusters, logistics hubs and ports. Faster and more predictable rail movement can help companies plan inventories, shipments and production more efficiently.
“By enabling higher wagon count per rake and faster freight trains, including double-stack container operations, the DFC improves rail productivity, asset utilisation, and transport economics,” Jagannarayan Padmanabhan, Senior Director and Global Head, Consulting at Crisil Intelligence, told TOI.
“It strengthens connectivity between ports, industrial clusters, logistics parks and hinterland markets, facilitating more efficient movement of both containerised and bulk commodities,” he added.
According to Padmanabhan, shorter transit times can improve service reliability, expand market access and lower logistics costs, potentially strengthening India's supply-chain efficiency, manufacturing competitiveness and export performance.
What needs to happen next?
The completion of the DFC network is a major milestone, but experts say the infrastructure alone will not deliver its full potential.Jaffrey Thomas, Partner - Transport and Logistics at PwC India, said the impact on logistics costs, rail's modal share and overall economic efficiency could be enhanced through four key measures.
These include standardising and upgrading peripheral feeder connectivity to the DFC, introducing competitive pricing models such as GTKm-based pricing across cargo and container categories, offering innovative products such as assured transit slots, and developing Gati Shakti terminals and multimodal logistics parks with DFC-grade connectivity.
The focus, therefore, will increasingly shift from simply having dedicated tracks to ensuring that cargo can efficiently reach and leave those corridors.
Can DFC shift freight from roads to rail?
A major objective for Indian Railways is to increase the share of freight carried by rail.Road transport currently handles a significant portion of India's freight movement, despite rail being relatively cost-efficient for long-distance bulk and container cargo.
Padmanabhan said the rail coefficient across the Western DFC is around 20%, with the remainder of cargo being transported by road.
“While there would be some impact on the passenger train operations by freeing up of capacity, the main impact would be the modal shift from Road to Rail,” he said.
Thomas said the additional capacity created by the DFC should ease congestion and improve transit speeds on both corridors.
“This incremental capacity coupled with the right set of planning tools should enable the much-sought reliability in transit times. Faster transits will also allow for improved returns from investments in rolling stock,” he told TOI.
Rail freight is cheaper than road, but rail's share remains low
Indian rail freight is already among the more cost-efficient modes of transporting goods.The cost is estimated at around Rs 1.96 per tonne-km from terminal to terminal, compared with approximately Rs 2.3 per tonne-km in the US. Road freight, meanwhile, costs around Rs 4 per tonne-km.
Yet rail accounts for only about 20% of India's freight movement, according to Padmanabhan.
He said the next phase should focus on expanding DFC capacity, accelerating multimodal logistics parks, improving first- and last-mile connectivity, encouraging greater private sector participation and strengthening port-rail integration.
These measures, he said, could further reduce logistics costs, improve freight efficiency and strengthen India's competitiveness in global markets.
What comes after the existing DFC network?
The completion of the current DFC network does not mark the end of India's freight corridor ambitions.The Union Budget has proposed a 2,052-km Dedicated Freight Corridor between Dankuni in West Bengal and Surat in Gujarat, passing through Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The proposed corridor would integrate with the existing Western DFC and provide connectivity to ports on India's western coast.
The government has also examined proposals for other corridors, including an East Coast corridor between Kharagpur and Vijayawada, an East-West corridor linking Palghar with Dankuni through Bhusawal, Nagpur and Kharagpur, an East-West sub-corridor between Rajkharsawan and Andal, and a North-South sub-corridor connecting Vijayawada, Nagpur and Itarsi.
These proposals, however, have not yet been sanctioned.
From faster trains to a more efficient supply chain
The completion of India's 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor network is more than the conclusion of a long-running railway infrastructure project.Its larger promise lies in freeing up capacity on conventional railway lines, making freight movement faster and more predictable, improving connections between factories and ports, and potentially encouraging a shift from road to rail.
For a country seeking to strengthen manufacturing and become a larger player in global supply chains, reducing the time and cost involved in moving goods will be critical.
The next challenge will be to maximise what the completed DFC network can deliver, not just by running faster freight trains, but by building the terminals, feeder links, pricing systems and multimodal connections needed to turn dedicated railway capacity into lower logistics costs and greater economic efficiency.
