The state's chief minister Revanth Reddy met Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi on Wednesday and urged the Centre to expedite approvals for the second phase of the metro project, arguing that now that the first phase is under their control, implementation of subsequent phases would become more streamlined.
According to the state government, a detailed project report for Phase-II covering 122.9 km across seven corridors has already been submitted to the Centre. The proposed expansion is estimated to cost Rs 38,595 crore. During the meeting, Reddy told the minister that Hyderabad’s rapid growth and rising commuter traffic necessitates a larger metro network to strengthen urban mobility and improve connectivity across the city.
The Telangana government also pushed for the proposed Rajiv Gandhi International Airport-Bharat Future City corridor to be taken up under Metro Phase-III. Reddy said the DPR for the Phase-III corridor has also been submitted to the Centre.
On April 29, L&T divested its entire stake in L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) for Rs 1,461.47 crore as part of its broader strategy of exiting the development projects portfolio. The Telangana government then officially took over the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-I as of May 1, a network that spans 69 kilometres and three corridors. It currently has an average ridership of around 4.5 lakh passengers per day.
