Southern railway hopeful of achieving freight target

The Southern Railways is confident of achieving the annual target of 31.4 million tons of freight before this fiscal end, a top Railway official said on Thursday.

TIRUCHIRAPALLI: The Southern Railways is confident of achieving the annual target of 31.4 million tons of freight before this fiscal end, a top Railway official said on Thursday.

"Although there was a setback on freight movement in the last few months, 19 million tons of freight mobilisation have already been achieved so far," Southern Railways General Manager Rakesh Chopra told reporters.

He attributed the dip due to poor or nil inter-state import of foodgrains, overall loading of foodgrains from delta districts, closure of two fertilizer plants in the south etc.

During the last year, he said Southern Railway had mobilised 30 million tons of freight.

Referring to pending projects, he said in the current year, Southern Railways was handling new projects worth Rs 1,000 crore which include gauge conversion works for about 320 km and doubling the track for a length of 77 km.

In Southern Railways, only about 1,200 km length of metre gauge were pending for conversion to broad gauge and that also would be taken up in the 11th plan.
