Raj Heritage train to function as restaurant post phase-out

One of Rajasthan's chief tourist attractions, the 'Heritage on Wheels', may soon be transformed into 'restaurants on wheels'.

NEW DELHI: One of Rajasthan's chief tourist attractions, the 'Heritage on Wheels', may soon be transformed into 'restaurants on wheels', with Indian Railways planning to sell its bogies to hoteliers once the exotic train is phased out later this year.

The authorities are waiting for approval from the ministry for their proposal for the "station wheel" restaurants, as the heritage train introduced on the lines of 'Palace on Wheels' in February 2006 ends its run.

The train is being phased out as the meter-gauge section on which the train runs is being converted to broad gauge.
"We have sent a proposal that the nine bogies can be sold to hoteliers so that they can run it as restaurants stationed at railway stations. We are awaiting approval," a senior official of the IRTDC said.

The luxury train has nine coaches with 36 cabins that have exquisite interior decorations. Ensuring a "special" journey for the travellers, the train also offers facilities like watching TV and listening to music. It also has two restaurants -Maharaja and Maharani - besides a bar-cum-lounge.
