Railways wisens up, stops note recycling

The railways will issue ticket deposit receipts to those cancelling tickets valued at Rs 10,000 or more and the amount will be transferred to the passenger's bank account through cheque or e-transaction.

NEW DELHI: The railways has decided not to give cash refunds for tickets bought between November 9 and 11 if the cancellation amount is Rs 10,000 or more as it suspects some people tried to get around the government's demonetisation move by booking tickets from reservation counters with the intention of getting them cancelled later.

The railways will issue ticket deposit receipts to those cancelling tickets valued at Rs 10,000 or more and the amount will be transferred to the passenger's bank account through cheque or e-transaction.

“The passenger is required to furnish account details to receive the amount while cancelling the ticket,“ said an official. “If the passenger doesn't have an account, the refund will be done after getting his or her KYC (know your customer) details,“ he added.

The railways also clarified that it has not stopped issuing waitlisted tickets. Cash collection at ticket counters went up by Rs 24 crore on Wednesday compared with Tuesday while intake through etickets was down by Rs 10 crore.
