Railways to hire ex-armymen for security
Currently, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), responsible for guarding railway properties, is facing staff shortage.
"The ex-armymen are being considered for deployment at non-core areas like hospitals, residential areas, institutions and offices across the country," said M K Sinha, Director General of Railway Protection Force.
"With the heightened security threat perception, we need to strengthen our deployment in railway stations and trains. At the same time, there is a requirement of about 25,000 security personnel to be deployed in non-core areas for which it is becoming difficult to spare RPF personnel, he said.
Core security areas are trains, platforms, stations and passengers.
Currently, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), responsible for guarding railway properties, is facing staff shortage. While there are about 60,000 personnel in RPF, the force has about 10,000 vacant posts.
"We are looking for alternative arrangement for the deployment at non-core areas and hiring of ex-armymen is one of the options we are examining now," Sinha said.
"For us, safety of passengers and trains is more important than guarding hospitals and residential areas. But these are also railway properties which need to be guarded," Sinha said adding "we are finding it increasingly difficult to deploy our personnel in non-core areas.
