Railways mull bidding for vacant seats

The Indian Railways are mulling online bidding for vacant seats in sleeper classes below the notified price.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways are mulling online bidding for vacant seats in sleeper classes below the notified price.

"Like airline tickets, we are planning to allow bidding for vacant seats," a senior railway official said here today.

"Bidding will be permitted below the notified price," he said.

If there are vacant seats in AC two-tier coaches, then the bidding will start at AC three-tier fares, the official said.

"The bidding for vacant seats is part of our project for the development of a commercial portal for the Railways," he said.

"The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is developing the portal. The project, costing nearly Rs 100 crore, will be executed on the Public-Private Participation model," the official said.

Besides tickets, the portal will have facility for booking freight.

"Our aim is to switch over to online mode in a big way in phases. This includes tendering and procurement of goods," he said.
