Railways makes Rs 28.98 crore as 17.63 lakh senior citizens give up fare subsidy

Since July 22 last year, the railways has given senior citizens the option to avail of either the full concession given to them on tickets or half of it.

The Indian Railways bagged Rs 28.98 crore this fiscal on account of senior citizens opting out of the fare subsidy scheme. As many as 17.63 lakh senior citizens gave up their subsidy, the railways said in statement, which is a 35% jump in the said category.

Since July 22 last year, the railways has given senior citizens the option to avail of either the full concession given to them on tickets or half of it.

Option for giving up fare concession for senior citizens to the extent of 100% was already available.


"Till February 22, 9.08 lakh senior citizens gave up 100% of their concessional value whereas 8.55 lakh senior citizens gave up 50% of the concessional value of passenger fare," the railways said.

At present, male senior citizens get 40 per cent while women get 50 per cent concession on the total fare.
