Railways freight revenue goes up
The Railways have generated Rs 17,943.02 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the first five months (April to August) of the current financial year.
The increase equals an increase of 9.85 per cent, according to a release issued by the Railways.
Railways carried 308.89 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-August this year as compared to 288.81 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, reflecting an increase of 6.95 per cent.
The earnings from freight traffic during the month of August was Rs 3564.22 crore compared to Rs 3112.22 crore during the corresponding period last year.
Railways carried 61.84 million tonnes of freight in August as compared to 55.34 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year. Of the total earnings during the month of August, Rs 1312.04 crore came from transportation of 26.17 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 328.10 crore from 4.48 million tonnes of iron ore for exports and Rs 298.26 crore from 5.92 million tonnes of cement.
The Railways also earned Rs 250.25 crore from transporting 2.95 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant, Rs 241.30 crore from 2.88 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 202.25 crore from 2.09 million tonnes of iron and steel for steel plants, Rs 199.94 crore from 3.32 million tonnes of fertilisers, Rs 165.57 crore for 4.54 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants and Rs 566.51 crore from 9.49 million tonnes of other goods.
