Railways earn over Rs 53,000 cr from transportation of commodities

NEW DELHI: Sustaining its growth rate, Railways earned over Rs 53,000 crore from transportation of commodities during the 2008-09 financial year, of which Rs 20,000 alone came from transportation of coal.

During the financial year, Railways earned Rs 53,137 crore from the commodity transportation segment, out of which Rs 20,029 crore was generated from transportation of 369.41 million tonnes of coal and other commodities, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

The other commodities which was transported during the financial year included iron ore, cement, food grains, petroleum oil and lubricant, pig iron and finished steel, he said.

All put together, the combined freight traffic carried by Railways during the last fiscal stood at 833.03 million tonnes.

He said that in April this year alone, Railways earned Rs 4,571 crore from commodity freight traffic. Out of this figure, Rs 1,866 crore was generated from transportation of coal.
