PANVEL (RAIGAD): Railway Board was mulling a proposal to make Panvel a junction, Minister of State for Railways Naranbhai Rathwa on Monday said.

The minister was speaking at a function to launch 13 new services on the Panvel-Andheri, Panvel-Wadala and Panvel-Vashi section on harbour line of the Central Railway here.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh inaugurated the new services.

Speaking on the occasion, Deshmukh said the Rs 3500-Rs 4000 crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project-1 will be completed by 2009 and the next phase will begin in 2010.

Referring to the demand of the locals for an elevated bridge near Panvel-Goa and Panvel-Pune section of the National Highway, the Chief Minister said his government is exploring whether the Metro Rail and Sky bus projects, conceptualised by the state government, can be implemented in Panvel.

Guardian minister of Raigad district Sunil Tatkare, who was present on the occasion, demanded a railway line on the Panvel-Karjat route and doubling of the railway track on Panvel-Roha section of Konkan railway.
