New Delhi: The Indian Railways has raised passenger fares by up to 2 paise per km. The increased fares will come into effect from Friday. An official statement said Thursday that Sleeper, AC and non-AC Classes will face one paisa per km increase for non-mail or non-express trains.

Mail or Express fares will go up by 2 paisa per km, it said.

These fares have been rationalised "with the objective of balancing affordability for passengers and sustainability of operations," it said.

There is no change in fares for suburban services and season tickets, including suburban and non-suburban routes, it added. Officials said despite the increase, roughly half the passenger fare across classes will continue to be subsidised. For reference, the fare for a 3AC ticket from Delhi to Howrah will now be around ₹1.17 per km. In Second Class Ordinary, there is no increase in fare for journeys up to 215 km, ensuring short-distance and daily commuters are not impacted. - Our Bureau
