Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Chennai on October 11 to dedicate a Metro rail project to the public and participate in other official programmes, senior BJP leader Pon Radhakrishnan confirmed on Monday.

Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the 14.6-km Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of the Chennai Metro's Phase II project and take a train ride from Poonamallee to Porur, according to party sources.

Radhakrishnan was speaking at an event organised at Kamalalayam, the BJP state headquarters here to welcome Tamil Nadu BJP in-charge Ram Madhav and co-incharges.

The newly appointed members had come to meet BJP state president Nainar Nagendran.

The team also held extensive strategy meetings with state office-bearers, district presidents, and wing heads to gear up for upcoming electoral challenges.

Welcoming the appointments, Radhakrishnan termed the new central team a massive boost for the state unit.

Detailing the party's upcoming schedule, Radhakrishnan said the state unit will take out 'Seva Jyothi' rallies across all revenue district headquarters on October 7 to commemorate Modi's 25 years of uninterrupted public service as Gujarat chief minister and prime minister.

Praising Modi for consistently championing Tamil language and heritage globally, the former union minister recalled the prime minister gifting a Russian translation of the ancient Tamil classic 'Thirukkural' to President Vladimir Putin recently.

He remarked that the eight crore Tamils have far more reason to take pride in the prime minister than the seven crore people of his home state of Gujarat.

Mounting a sharp counter-attack on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over recent criticisms, Radhakrishnan alleged that the opposition's underlying agenda is to destabilise India and reduce it to the socio-political situations currently seen in Bangladesh, Nepal, or Sri Lanka.

He further claimed that the internal dynamics of the Congress are such that Rahul Gandhi would soon be "chased out by his own party members."
