Northeast Frontier Railway cracks down on rail protests with legal and financial action

In a significant shift from conventional methods, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has adopted a new strategy combining legal enforcement with financial accountability to address protests and rail blockades.

Moving beyond traditional responses, NFR has begun filing civil compensation suits against individuals and groups responsible for disrupting train services by staging protests on railway tracks. This approach, rarely seen in the Indian Railways system, aims to recover financial losses while simultaneously pursuing criminal action under the Railways Act through the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

According to Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, two civil suits have already been filed in Alipurduar and Malda civil courts. These suits seek compensation totaling ₹5.94 crore for damages caused by extended rail blockades. The legal move has already had a deterrent effect—four planned "Rail Roko" protests have been called off since the initiative was introduced.

This coordinated effort is being led by Senior Divisional Operations Managers (Sr. DOMs), with support from the RPF and the General Manager’s Law Office. It is being hailed as a model of administrative firmness and legal innovation within the railway zone.

Sabyasachi De emphasised that NFR, in alignment with Indian Railways' broader goals, is committed to ensuring uninterrupted train operations. The zone aims to discourage the misuse of railway tracks for agitations and uphold safety, punctuality, and public convenience—while firmly holding accountable those who disrupt the railway lifeline of the region.
