National Institute of Design to design coach interior, pantry car for Indian Railways

NEW DELHI: Ambience of railway stations and decor of carriages are set for change as the Indian Railways has decided to join hands with the National Institute of Design to redesign coach interior, pantry car, and seating arrangements at platforms and waiting halls.

Among others, NID will also design ladder for upper berths, lighting arrangements at stations and circulating areas to give an aesthetic touch to rail facilities.

Railways will tomorrow sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Commerce and Industry Ministry for setting up of Railway Design Centre at the National Institute of Design (NID) at Ahmedabad, according to a senior Railway Ministry official.

The MoU will be signed in the presence of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Railways will provide Rs 10 cr fund to NID for the job. There will be a committee of four senior railway officials to monitor the project.
