Mumbai rains: Conscious call taken to stop trains

“There was a crisis — why should you have more people coming into the city? It would cause more problems in evacuating and transport,” the official said.

MUMBAI: Authorities took an unprecedented call in shutting the suburban trains network. A top state official said trains could have continued but BMC Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had a chat with railway authorities decided to shut down.

“There was a crisis — why should you have more people coming into the city? It would cause more problems in evacuating and transport,” the official said.
