MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority aims to start commercial operations of the 19.54 km long Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle monorail project by August, the state-run authority said Saturday.

The Mumbai Monorail, the first such project in India, is being implemented by MMRDA while a consortium of Larsen & Toubro and Malaysia's infrastructure firm Scomi Engineering is executing it. The project is being constructed at a cost of around Rs 3,000 crores.

The safety certification process for the mororail system will begin in June, MMRDA executives said after a test ride organised for media on Saturday.

The Chembur-Wadala stretch of the monorail is likely to be commissioned by August, while the Wadala-Jacob Circle stretch will take a year after that. The authorities have been test running blue, pink and green rakes for the 8.3-km corridor connecting Chembur and Wadala since mid-November.
