Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday said E Sreedharan, former MD Delhi at the Metro Rail Corporation met him and discussed in detail about a new railway line between Nilambur in Malappuram district, Kerala and Nanjangud in Mysuru district, Karnataka.

Sreedharan suggested many ideas to improve rail infrastructure and connectivity in Kerala, the railway minister said in a post on X.

Five years ago, while contesting the assembly polls in Kerala, Sreedharan had told ET that Nilambur-Nanjangud railway line would benefit both Karnataka and Kerala and would provide Karnataka with access to Kochi port. The subject is back in the spotlight as assembly elections are due in Kerala in April.

AICC leader Rahul Gandhi too had sought revival of the Nilambur-Nanjangud railway project that passes through Wayanad, while seeking re-election from Wayanad in 2024.

Sections of rail users have been demanding the new line from Nilambur. There is an existing single line from Nilambur to Shornur junction in Palakkad division. A new line will establish a seamless rail link between Nanjangud to Shornur junction. There is already rail connectivity from Nanjangud to Bengaluru via Mysuru.
