India is moving closer to its first high-speed rail service, with a Bharat-made Bullet Train taking shape for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently shared a video on X, taking viewers inside the train and offering a glimpse of its design, passenger facilities and engineering features. The train is being manufactured at Bharat Earth Movers Limited's (BEML) facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Bharat-made Bullet Train: Speed, capacity and key specifications

The eight-car train has been designed to operate at a maximum speed of 249 kmph, while its maximum test speed is 280 kmph. It will have a total length of around 202 metres and a passenger capacity of approximately 557.

Its configuration includes four motor cars and four trailer cars. Seven coaches will have standard-class seating arranged in a 3x2 layout, while the executive-class coach will feature a 2x2 seating arrangement.

The train will also have two dedicated spaces for Divyangjan passengers or persons with reduced mobility (PRM). Drivers' cabins at both ends will be equipped with an intelligent on-board control system to support decision-making and coordination with the operation control centre.

The design also allows two eight-car trains to be coupled to form a 16-car formation, providing flexibility for future operations.

Bullet Train interiors: Ergonomic seats, luggage space and modern facilities

Passenger comfort has been a key consideration in the train's interior design. The seats have been developed keeping Indian passenger requirements in mind, with adequate legroom and an ergonomic layout.

Each coach will have LED lighting, overhead baggage racks and additional floor-mounted luggage stands for larger suitcases. Passengers will also have access to power outlets for charging mobile phones and using laptops.

The train will feature modern bio-digester toilets designed to minimise waste discharge. Wide windows along the seating rows will allow passengers to enjoy views during the journey.

A sealed, single-piece gangway connecting the coaches will also allow passengers to move between cars more comfortably.

Passenger information system: Wi-Fi entertainment and multilingual announcements

The Bharat-made Bullet Train will feature a passenger information system to keep travellers updated throughout their journey.

LCD screens inside the coaches will display information in English, Hindi and regional languages. The train will also have public address facilities and automatic announcements to provide audio updates.

Emergency talk-back units will be installed in passenger cabins and vestibules, allowing passengers to contact train staff if assistance is required.

A Wi-Fi-based infotainment system will provide access to preloaded entertainment content during the journey.

Accessibility features: Wheelchair-friendly design and level boarding

Accessibility has been incorporated into the train's design, with facilities for passengers with disabilities and those with reduced mobility.

The train floor will be aligned with platform height to make boarding easier. Retractable steps fitted near the doors will help reduce the gap between the train and platform.

The coaches will also have designated seating and accessible toilets for Divyangjan passengers. Doorways will be designed to accommodate wheelchair movement, while information signs will include Braille features.

Bullet Train air conditioning and noise reduction features

The train's heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system has been designed to maintain comfortable temperature and humidity levels inside the coaches. Each car will have two HVAC units.

Several features have also been incorporated to reduce noise and vibrations during travel. These include sound insulation in the car body and floor, noise-damping coatings, and protective components such as skirts, bogie covers and fairings.

Together, these measures are intended to make the journey quieter and more comfortable for passengers.

Bullet Train technology: Regenerative braking and 25 kV power system

The train will operate on a 25 kV, 50 Hz single-phase AC traction system, with power supplied through a heavy compound catenary.

It will also use regenerative braking technology, which recovers some of the energy generated during braking and feeds it back into the system. This can help improve overall energy efficiency.

Aerodynamic design to reduce air resistance and tunnel pressure

The train's exterior has been developed with a focus on aerodynamic performance. Its nose and body profile have been optimised using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, which help engineers study how air moves around the train.

The design aims to reduce air resistance, minimise turbulence and manage pressure waves that can develop when high-speed trains enter tunnels. The roof panels, HVAC units and airflow deflectors have also been integrated into the overall aerodynamic profile.

Sealed car bodies and specially designed wind-guiding features are intended to manage pressure differences and improve passenger comfort at high speeds.
