Lalu launches 53 new trains
Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has proposed 53 new trains, including 10 Garib Raths, in the coming fiscal.
While daily service of Garib Raths would be provided on short-haul routes, such as Varanasi-Delhi and Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam, on longer routes like Ranchi-New Delhi, it would run twice or thrice a week. Garib Rath is a low-cost air conditioned (AC) train. New Garib Raths would also be deployed on Jaipur-Chandigarh, Secundarabad-Visakhapatnam and Ranchi-Delhi routes.
The railways minister also proposed 300 additional train services in Mumbai suburban.
Announcing special trains, Mr Prasad said a special train connecting Anandpur Sahib and Patna Sahib to Gurudwara Sachkhand would run during the tercentenary function of Shri Guru Granth Sahib while a special train between Pune and Delhi would run during the Commonwealth Games planned in the two cities.
During 2008-09, 350 km of new railway lines is scheduled to be constructed. In this financial year, gauge conversion work of 2,150 km and doubling of 1,000 km of tracks is also targeted. The 155 km of new lines would be completed by March end.
In the last three budgets, Mr Yadav had introduced over 150 new trains and about 800 new coaches.
