Mumbaikars who wriggle into crowded commuter trains and daring youngsters known for their train surfing skills have good news from the Railways minister.

The Railways will introduce 300 additional services in 2008-09, after almost fulfiling last years promise of 150 new trains. Of the 150 promised, 144 have already been introduced, reports Gireesh Chandra Prasad from Mumbai.

Mumbaikars, who now pack themselves into compartments many times beyond its capacity, can also look forward to elevated fully air conditioned metro service between Mumbai Central the heart of South Mumbai city and Virar, the last stop in the crowded Western suburban line. The Railways will study the financial viability of the project and would explore public private partnerships to implement it.

This is in addition to completing the first phase of Mumbai Urban Transport Project in 2009 and starting work on the second phase, which is likely to be completed in the next few years. An investment of Rs 5,000 crore has been earmarked for the second phase. Besides, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, earlier known as VT, will be modernised by inviting private players.

City dwellers will now be able to use a multi-purpose smart card for travel and platform tickets in Central suburban trains as well as for buying bus tickets. This project is likely to be extended to the more crowded Western line later.
