The first freight train to Kashmir reached Saturday. In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this will enhance both progress and prosperity. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said this train reached newly commissioned Anantnag Goods Shed in the Kashmir Valley from Punjab.

This marked the region’s integration into India’s national freight network, an official statement said while adding connectivity will reduce transport costs for citizens and open new avenues for trade.

The new goods train link will allow export of Kashmir’s products more efficiently, creating new business and export opportunities, the statement said.


Fruits and dry fruits, flowers and floriculture, handicrafts, and spices among those with strong domestic demand and export potential. Beverages and processed foods such as Kahwa tea, apple juice and cider, apricot kernel oil, walnut oil, besides honey and herbal products such as mountain honey, medicinal herbs, essential oils are expected to find bigger markets.
