For the first time ever, the high-speed train, which travels from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Shirdi, is fully staffed by women, including the loco pilot, assistant loco pilot, train manager, ticket examiners, and on-board catering staff.
Swapnil Nila, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railways, emphasised the significance of this initiative.
“Indian Railways has always worked towards creating opportunities for women. In line with our commitment to empowering women, today, on International Women’s Day, we are proud to have an all-women crew operating the CSMT-Shirdi Vande Bharat Express. This initiative extends beyond passenger trains—today, we’ve also ensured that our goods trains are operated by women," said Nila.
Central Railways also took to social media to share their pride in this achievement, calling it a “historic moment” that celebrates the strength, dedication, and leadership of women within the Indian Railways sector.
The post on X highlighted, “HISTORIC MOMENT! For the first time ever, a Vande Bharat Express is being fully operated by an all-women crew, departing from CSMT on this #InternationalWomensDay! A proud moment celebrating the strength, dedication, and leadership of women in Indian Railways!"
This move comes as part of the ongoing efforts to recognize and encourage women’s contributions across various sectors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to 'Nari Shakti' (women power) in his message for International Women's Day. The Prime Minister shared that his social media platforms would be taken over by women from diverse fields, further acknowledging their remarkable achievements.
“We bow to our Nari Shakti on #WomensDay! Our Government has always worked for empowering women, reflecting in our schemes and programs. Today, as promised, my social media properties will be taken over by women who are making a mark in diverse fields!” PM Modi expressed in his post.
The all-women crew aboard the Vande Bharat Express represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and empowerment within the Indian workforce, and especially within the traditionally male-dominated railway sector.
