The facility of free travel insurance provided by Indian Railways has ended from September 1. The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation started giving free travel insurance from December 2017 in a bid to promote digital transactions.

Those desirous of availing travel insurance will have to shell out 68 paise as premium and the facility will only be available on tickets booked online. Travelers booking tickets from the IRCTC website or mobile application will have two options: Opt-in or opt-out.

The insurance provided by the Indian Railways to passengers traveling on a valid ticket covers risks during a train journey. This is besides the compensation given to passengers in case of a train mishap.

The maximum cover given is Rs 10 lakh in case of a person's death during a train journey, Rs 7.5 lakh if a person is disabled due to an accident, Rs 2 lakh if injured and Rs 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains.
