Hydrogen-Powered Toy Train: Indian Railways plans big change on iconic Kalka-Shimla route; check what could soon be different for passengers
Indian Railways is planning to introduce a hydrogen-powered toy train on the 96-km Kalka-Shimla heritage route under the Centre's Hydrogen for Heritage initiative. Barog railway station has been identified as a possible site for a hydrogen product...
Unlike conventional diesel-powered trains, hydrogen trains use fuel cells to generate electricity. Water is their primary by-product, making the technology a cleaner option for railway operations.

Hydrogen-powered toy train planned for Kalka-Shimla heritage route
The proposal is aimed at bringing cleaner technology to the 120-year-old Kalka-Shimla railway line, which is known for its scenic journey through the Shivalik hills. The Railways has completed a survey of the route, while Barog railway station has been identified as a possible location for a hydrogen production facility to support the proposed service. The project was included in Northern Railway's 2024-25 plan. Officials have indicated that a trial run could be conducted after the required technical and administrative procedures are completed, The Tribune reported.
The introduction of hydrogen technology on the narrow-gauge route will, however, require specialised engineering solutions. The train's operation will depend on technical feasibility, the necessary approvals from the Railway Ministry and completion of other formalities.
Centre's Hydrogen for Heritage initiative: What is the plan?
The proposed Kalka-Shimla service is part of a wider push to bring hydrogen-powered trains to India's railway network. In 2023, the Centre announced plans to introduce 35 hydrogen-powered trains across the country. The initiative is intended to reduce dependence on conventional fuels and encourage cleaner railway operations.
In 2024, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also wrote to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting the introduction of hydrogen-powered trains on the historic Kalka-Shimla route.
Northern Railway officials have said the project is significant for India's narrow-gauge network, while similar hydrogen train initiatives are also being pursued on broad-gauge sections, The Tribune reported.
Kalka-Shimla railway line: Route, tunnels and UNESCO heritage status
The Kalka-Shimla railway line stretches for 96 km and was built during the British era between 1898 and 1903. It connects Kalka in Haryana with Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, passing through the scenic Shivalik hills. The railway route is known for its remarkable engineering, featuring 103 tunnels and more than 900 bridges. Its winding tracks, mountain views and historic stations have made it a popular attraction among tourists.
The line received UNESCO World Heritage recognition in July 2008 as part of the Mountain Railways of India, alongside the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
If approved, the hydrogen-powered toy train would add a new chapter to the heritage route, combining its historic appeal with cleaner railway technology. However, its launch timeline will depend on the outcome of technical assessments and the Railway Ministry's approval.
