New Delhi: The Indian Railways awarded the Vande Bharat-type train sets tender to Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives for Rs 2,211 crore on Friday. The contract involves the designing and manufacturing of propulsion, control and other equipment required for making 44 rakes, said an official statement.

In August last year, the railways had cancelled the tender for the manufacturing of the 44 rakes, after the Chinese joint venture company, CRRC Pioneer Electric (India), had emerged as the only foreign bidder among the six contenders for manufacturing the semi-high speed trains. Known as Train 18 at the time, it was later rechristened as Vande Bharat Express.
