Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced addition of coaches and special trains across the country, a move to ease travel during the upcoming festive season.

The minister said that the Indian Railways has added General Coaches to 108 trains to accommodate the surge in passengers during the peak festive period which includes Diwali, Durga Puja and Chhath Puja.

In addition, the Railways has sanctioned 12,500 extra coaches specifically for Chhath Puja and Diwali special trains.


The government has already notified a total of 5,975 trains for the year 2024-25, ensuring that more than 1 crore passengers will be able to travel home for the festivals, Vaishnaw said.

Earlier the government had introduced as many as 342 special trains for the Ganesh festival, a time when lakhs of people travel to their native places in Konkan from Mumbai every year during the ten-day festival.

Earlier in July, the government had run more than 300 special trains to and from Puri, Odisha to accommodate the rush of pilgrims for the Jagannath Rath Yatra.
