Ghaziabad proposes new metro line: Vaishali–Gokulpuri metro via Hindon Civil Terminal planned, check two other metros planned for the city
Ghaziabad is set to get a new 16-kilometre metro corridor. The Ghaziabad Development Authority has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to prepare a project report. This new line will connect Vaishali to Gokulpuri in northeast Delhi. It will pas...
The proposed corridor is expected to include seven stations and pass through Sahibabad, Mohan Nagar, Pasunda, Hindon Civil Terminal and Gagan Vihar.
Phase V expansion plan
An official told TOI that in July last year, DMRC had proposed 18 metro extension projects in Delhi-NCR under Phase V, including three in Ghaziabad. In line with this, GDA has now requested preparation of the DPR for the Vaishali–Gokulpuri corridor and expects it to be submitted within a couple of months.Under the initial Phase V plan, DMRC had proposed a 12 to 13 kilometre corridor linking Gokulpuri on the Pink Line to Arthala on the Red Line via Hindon Civil Terminal. Officials told TOI that GDA sought an extension of the corridor to improve connectivity for more than five lakh residents of Indirapuram, Vasundhara and Vaishali.

Hindon Civil Terminal is located about five kilometres from the nearest metro stations, Dilshad Garden and Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar on the Red Line. While the Sahibabad RRTS station provides a faster option, commuters largely rely on cabs and auto-rickshaws for last-mile connectivity.
Other proposed metro corridors in Ghaziabad
Two additional metro corridors have also been proposed in the city. These include a three-kilometre extension from Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda on the Red Line to Ghaziabad railway station, and the five-kilometre Noida Electronic City to Sahibabad link, which is expected to serve Indirapuram, Shakti Khand and Sector 5 of Vasundhara with five stations.Estimated cost and funding challenges
The three corridors together are expected to add around 25 kilometres to the metro network at an estimated cost of ₹7,500 crore, calculated at approximately ₹300 crore per kilometre. The Noida Electronic City to Sahibabad corridor has remained stalled since 2018 despite a DPR of ₹1,873 crore, mainly due to lack of funds. GDA had earlier sought ₹2,441 crore under the 16th Finance Commission for metro projects in the city.
Funding prospects improve after ministry directive
An official told TOI that a directive from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to prepare DPRs has improved prospects for funding, and the projects could now move forward with support from central and state government grants. The Economic Times News App for Quarterly Results, Latest News in ITR, Business, Share Market, Live Sensex News & More.
