Indian Railways has rolled out a comprehensive upgrade programme for its premium Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express services across the country, TOI reports The initiative aims to enhance passenger experience by addressing long-standing issues related to comfort, cleanliness, and onboard facilities in these flagship trains that connect major cities.

The Railway Board has instructed all zonal railways to conduct detailed inspections of every rake and prepare strict time-bound action plans to fix deficiencies. The focus is on modernising seating with new upholstery, functional snack tables and USB charging ports in every seat. Toilets will receive complete upgrades with better fittings, improved drainage systems and higher hygiene standards.

Railways will also work on reducing jerks for a smoother ride, upgrade vestibules and gangways, install better LED lighting, and refresh coach interiors including flooring and wall panels. Clearer destination boards and strengthened digital passenger information systems (PAPIS) along with CCTV surveillance will be added to improve safety and communication.

Approximately 25 pairs of Shatabdi Express and more than two dozen Jan Shatabdi Express trains will be covered under this exercise.
