East West Metro work kicks off, to be operational by June 2018
The work in phase I of the project, which will connect the IT hub of Salt Lake to Sealdah, the central part of the city, was put on hold for last four years.
KOLKATA: The work for the first phase of the East West Metro rail project has started and the track would be operational latest by June 2018, said Babul Supriyo, union minister of state for the urban development, housing and poverty alleviation.
The work in phase I of the project, which will connect the IT hub of Salt Lake to Sealdah, the central part of the city, was put on hold for last four years.
Claiming that the issues related to the encroachment and rehabilitation were “resolved”, Supriyo added, “We had been speaking to the state government for long and the discussion had borne fruit. The encroachment issue in Duttabad area has been resolved. The people living in the area had been offered a compensation and rehabilitation.” The minister was speaking in a programme in the city today.
He further added that he has been trying to prepone the commencement of the project and the rail officials have assured to make the service open for people by December, 2017.
As far as the second phase is concerned, there is an issue with the re-alignment of track. The second phase will connect Sealdah and Howrah Maidan. “After the realignment of the project, the proposed track passes through an area that is 40 meters away from the old mint. According to the ASI guidelines, no construction should take place in 100 meters of a heritage structure. In this case, the KMRC has written to the ASI for considering it as a special case. The track would be constructed without affecting the heritage structure. We are waiting for the approval from ASI,’ he added.
