DMRC Pink Line Update: Delhi Metro introduces real-time coach crowding display; check how passengers can find less crowded coaches before boarding
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has launched a cutting-edge real-time display showing coach occupancy on its Pink Line. This innovative system allows passengers to view crowd levels through screens installed on platform stations before boarding. ...
The feature was previously available on the Magenta Line (Line 8), where it has been operational since 2022. Following the positive response, DMRC has now introduced the facility on the Pink Line (Line 7), which connects Majlis Park with Shiv Vihar/Maujpur-Babarpur.
How does the real-time coach occupancy display work?
The system uses load sensors installed in metro coaches to measure their current weight and compare it with their respective empty weight. Based on this information, the approximate passenger occupancy percentage of each coach is calculated and displayed on the Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) screens on platforms shortly before a train arrives. The coaches are identified as C1 to C6, allowing commuters to check the occupancy levels and decide where to stand on the platform before boarding.
“Based on this data, the approximate passenger load percentage of each coach (displayed as C1 to C6) is calculated and shown on the platform PIDS screens shortly before the train arrives. Implementing this system on Pink Line was challenging, as it is a circular line,” said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, corporate communications, DMRC.
How will the facility benefit Delhi Metro commuters?
The facility is expected to make daily journeys more convenient, particularly during morning and evening peak hours when certain coaches tend to become overcrowded faster than others.By checking the occupancy information displayed on platform screens, passengers can move towards relatively less crowded coaches before the train arrives. This will reduce the need to board packed compartments or walk along the platform after the train has arrived in search of additional space.
“It encourages more balanced occupancy across coaches, improving overall comfort and reducing local overcrowding. The move can enhance the travel experience during peak hours, when certain coaches tend to fill up faster than others,” said Dayal.
