Indian Railways has cancelled several Mail and Express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations during the 4 am to 2 pm window on October 10, citing the likelihood of severe road traffic congestion ahead of a planned protest in the capital. The cancellations apply to trains departing from their originating stations after 2 pm on October 9 and scheduled to reach the two stations during the affected period. The decision was taken following intelligence inputs and traffic advisories warning of possible disruptions around the railway stations, ANI reported, citing railway sources. Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) have also issued updates through their official social media accounts, while additional cancellations have been announced separately by railway divisions. The Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat (Rapid Rail) service is also likely to be suspended, although further details are awaited.

Why has Indian Railways cancelled trains to Delhi?

The cancellations come ahead of a protest planned in Delhi on October 10. Authorities anticipate heavy traffic around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations, raising concerns that passengers could struggle to reach their trains on time.

According to ANI, sources in the Railway Board said the order was issued to prevent inconvenience to the public amid the expected congestion. Under the arrangement, trains originating after 2 pm on October 9 and scheduled to arrive at either station between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10 will be cancelled at their originating stations.

The move follows reports of travel disruption in the capital. IANS quoted railway sources as saying that around 5,000 passengers missed their trains on Thursday after protests and traffic jams affected movement in and around New Delhi after noon.

“Several passengers could not reach railway stations on time, while IRCTC group bookings were also cancelled,” the news agency quoted the sources as saying.

Sealdah–New Delhi Rajdhani Express cancelled

The Sealdah division of Eastern Railway separately announced the cancellation of the Sealdah–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, train number 12313, scheduled to depart on October 9.

In a post on X on Friday, October 9, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Sealdah, said the decision was linked to anticipated heavy road traffic around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations on October 10.

“Passengers are requested to kindly take note of this change and plan their journey accordingly,” the post said, adding that the railway regretted the inconvenience caused.

Mumbai–Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express cancelled

Separately, West Central Railway's Bhopal division announced the cancellation of train number 22221, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)–Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express, on October 9. The cancellation was attributed to operational reasons.

The Mumbai division of Central Railway also shared an update about the train through the official X handle of DRM Mumbai.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Garib Rath cancellation announced

The Ranchi division also issued a social media update about the cancellation of the Hazrat Nizamuddin Garib Rath train on October 10. The update was shared by the division's official account.

These separate announcements indicate that passengers travelling to or from the Delhi region may face changes beyond the initial list of Mail and Express trains.

What should passengers do before travelling?

Passengers scheduled to travel on October 9 or 10 should check their train's latest running status and cancellation information through official Indian Railways channels before leaving for the station. They should also account for possible road congestion around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin.

Travellers whose trains have been cancelled should check the applicable refund or alternative-travel arrangements through the railway or booking platform used for their tickets. Since the disruption information includes separate announcements from different divisions, passengers should verify their specific train number rather than assume that every train listed in the broader advisory has been cancelled.
