Delhi Metro goes 'Atmanirbhar': 'Made-in-India' platform screen doors to be installed in upcoming metro corridors

Metro Platform screen doors: Delhi Metro has decided to install indigenously manufactured platform screen doors (PSDs) across all stations in its upcoming Phase IV and Phase V corridors. This marks a major shift towards Atmanirbhar Bharat, followi...

In a strong push for self-reliance, Delhi Metro will now install Make-in-India platform screen doors at every station coming up under Phase IV and Phase V expansions. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited expressions of interest from Indian manufacturers, moving away from its earlier dependence on imported systems.

'Made-in-India' Platform Screen Doors

According to a Times of India report, this is the first time DMRC is going fully local for platform screen doors. The decision follows clear guidelines from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which directed all metro systems to procure PSDs with a minimum of 75% local manufacturing content. DMRC will install full-height platform screen doors at underground stations and half-height doors at elevated stations in the new corridors.

Current Status of PSDs in Delhi Metro

Out of 303 operational stations across the 416 km network, only 83 currently have half-height PSDs and just eight have full-height doors. Full-height PSDs are operational on the Airport Express Line and at Krishna Park Extension station on the Magenta Line. The Pink and Magenta lines (driverless) already feature PSDs, while six stations on the Yellow Line were retrofitted later.

Upcoming Expansions

The move will cover multiple new corridors under Phase IV, including RK Ashram to Janakpuri West, Aerocity to Tughlakabad, and others. Phase V expansions, recently announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will also get the indigenous safety system. The move is expected to create opportunities for Indian manufacturers and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.

Why Platform Screen Doors Matter

Platform Screen Doors improve passenger safety by preventing falls onto tracks, reducing suicides, and helping manage crowd flow during peak hours. They also improve air-conditioning efficiency in underground stations.
