The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) carried around 12,000 passengers on its heritage toy train joyrides between October 1 and 21. It generated a revenue of Rs 1.41 crore during the period, an official said on Thursday.

To accommodate the increase in the tourist numbers, the UNESCO World Heritage railway introduced special joyride services on shorter routes, allowing visitors to experience the historic train journey and the scenic landscapes of the Darjeeling hills.

Since October 1, the DHR has been running special joyrides between Darjeeling and Ghum, along with two round trips between Kurseong and Mahanadi, the official said.

Of the two Kurseong-Mahanadi services, one is operated by a steam locomotive and the other by a diesel engine, she added.

Darjeeling, popularly known as the Queen of the Hills, draws tourists from across India and abroad.
