Dail 139 for Railway inquiries
Three digits dialled on your telephone can now provide you with train timings and verification of your ticket status with Railway authorities inaugurating the helpine number '139' on Saturday.
The service provides inquiry regarding one's ticket, the running position of any train in the country, availability of tickets and fare, said Nalin Singhal, Managing Director of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
The system, which features Integrated Voice Response System and regional call centres, will have its zonal hub in the country's financial capital and is the second one to be started in the country.
"Presently the service is available in the north and west zones of the country and by October we hope to have the service active across the country," Singhal said.
The system, jointly developed by IRCTC and Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), also offers customers the feature of obtaining the information in regional languages like Marathi and Gujarati.
Services like SMS alerts, call back facility and rail ticket reservation over the telephone could be provided using this system in the future, he said.
The service for the Western Zone was inaugurated by Minister of State for Railways Naranbhai Rathwa today at a function here.
