Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, developed at a cost of around Rs 4,900 crore. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay accompanied the Prime Minister on a ride along the newly inaugurated route. Modi and Vijay jointly flagged off the new Metro services in the presence of Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The Prime Minister also purchased a ticket and briefly interacted with an employee at the ticket counter. The newly opened stretch is part of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro's Phase II project and is expected to improve connectivity between the city's western suburbs and the city centre.

Chennai Metro route: Passenger service timings

According to Chennai Metro Rail, regular passenger services on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch will begin at 4 pm on Sunday, October 11. Trains will operate in both directions until 9 pm. From Monday, October 12, services will run daily from 7 am to 9 pm in both directions. The last train will depart at 9 pm from both terminals: Poonamallee Bypass Metro station and Vadapalani Metro station on Corridor 4.

Chennai Metro Phase II: 11 stations across 15 km

The newly inaugurated stretch covers approximately 15 km and has 11 elevated Metro stations. The stations are Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus Stand, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani.

The new corridor features a 3.7-km double-decker structure, which combines Metro infrastructure with another transport level. It also uses advanced signalling technology designed to support driverless train operations.

The stretch is expected to reduce travel time for commuters and improve access between residential areas in Chennai's western suburbs and key parts of the city.

Chennai Metro Phase II: What commuters should know

The new stretch forms part of the wider Phase II expansion of the Chennai Metro network. Its opening is expected to strengthen public transport links across the western suburbs, including Poonamallee and Porur, and provide commuters with another option for travelling towards Vadapalani.

With the introduction of the new services, passengers can use the 11 stations along the route during the announced operating hours. Commuters should check Chennai Metro Rail's official updates for any changes to service timings or operational arrangements.
