Guwahati: The Union Cabinet has approved a major infrastructure work of doubling the railway line between Furkating and New Tinsukia, spanning a total length of 194 kilometres, under the jurisdiction of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) at an estimated cost of approximately Rs. 3634 crores.

This doubling project is a strategic move aimed at enhancing the capacity, speed and reliability of both passenger and freight transportation.

The Furkating - New Tinsukia section serves as a crucial rail link between Upper Assam and the rest of the country. This route currently handles important long-distance services such as the Rajdhani Express, along with numerous express and intercity trains, in addition to substantial freight traffic.

The doubling of this section is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency and ensure more reliable services. The project will provide a major boost to connectivity and economic development in the North-eastern region.
