Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reveals timeline for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project
India is set to witness a historic milestone in its transport infrastructure as the country’s first Bullet Train is expected to begin operations on August 15, 2027, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday.

The groundbreaking project, spanning 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, promises to revolutionise inter-city travel, cutting journey times significantly while introducing world-class high-speed rail standards in India.

Bullet Train Route and Opening Phases

According to Minister Vaishnaw, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor will be inaugurated in stages:
  • Surat to Bilimora – first section to open
  • Vapi to Surat – next phase
  • Vapi to Ahmedabad – third stage
  • Thane to Ahmedabad – subsequent phase
  • Mumbai to Ahmedabad – final stretch


He added, “Buy a Bullet Train ticket as on Independence Day in 2027; the country will get its first Bullet Train.”

This phased launch will ensure smooth operations while gradually connecting key cities including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane, and Mumbai.

Vande Bharat Express Inspires Confidence

Vaishnaw highlighted the success of the Vande Bharat Express, noting that it has created “a new sense of confidence across the country” for high-speed trains.

He also mentioned plans to introduce Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, offering the same comfort, safety, and standards for overnight journeys, with requests already pouring in from MPs across India.

"Requests are now coming in from all over India to run Vande Bharat trains, and almost every MP wants one. With the same comfort, safety, and standards, a new overnight journey will begin with the Vande Bharat Sleeper," he mentioned.

Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor: Key Facts

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project covers 352 km in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 156 km in Maharashtra.

As per the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL):

  • Over 85% of the corridor (~465 km) is being constructed on elevated viaducts
  • 326 km of elevated structures are already complete
  • 17 out of 25 river bridges along the route have been built

The 47-km Surat–Bilimora section is among the most advanced stretches, with civil works and track-bed preparation fully completed

Surat Station: A Landmark in High-Speed Rail Infrastructure

During his visit to Gujarat in November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a detailed review of the MAHSR project and inspected the Surat station, a structure inspired by the city’s globally renowned diamond industry.

Key features of Surat station include:
  • Height: 26.3 metres
  • Built-up area: 58,352 square metres

Three levels:
  • Ground floor – parking and security checks
  • Concourse level – lounges, restrooms, kiosks, ticketing
  • Platform level – boarding and passenger services

While structural work is complete, finishing touches such as interiors and station amenities are currently underway. Track works, including RC track-bed construction and temporary track installation, have also been completed at the site.
