Nearly a decade after the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was launched in 2017, Indian Railways is working towards rolling out an indigenously designed and developed high-speed train. The first prototype is expected to be ready by March 2027 and will subsequently undergo extensive testing by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
The development comes as work on India’s first high-speed rail corridor progresses, with the Surat-Bilimora section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor expected to become operational in August 2027.

Rs 866.87 crore contract for India’s first indigenous bullet train
Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, has awarded BEML Limited a contract worth Rs 866.87 crore to design, manufacture and commission two prototype high-speed trainsets.The trains will have a design speed of 280 kmph and will be capable of crossing 250 kmph during operations. Each trainset will consist of eight coaches.
Manufacturing has already begun, according to sources cited by TOI, with BEML developing the trains at its dedicated Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru.
The project is significant because it goes beyond simply introducing faster trains. It aims to create domestic expertise in designing and manufacturing high-speed rolling stock in India.

What makes India’s 280 kmph train different
As per a TOI report, the upcoming B-28 trainsets are being developed specifically for Indian operating conditions. This is important because high-speed trains used in countries such as Japan and across Europe are designed with their respective climatic and operating environments in mind.India presents a different engineering challenge, particularly because of its high temperatures, dust and varied environmental conditions.
The trains are planned to use stainless steel construction and will incorporate precision-driven technologies required for high-speed operations.
The trainsets will also feature fully air-conditioned chair-car coaches, reclining and rotatable seats, advanced onboard infotainment systems and facilities for divyangjan passengers.
Why building a bullet train is an engineering challenge
Developing a high-speed train is considerably more complex than increasing the speed of a conventional railway coach.At 250-280 kmph, engineers have to ensure that the train remains stable and provides passengers with a smooth ride. The body must be strong enough to withstand demanding operating conditions while remaining sufficiently lightweight.
The wheels, suspension and braking systems also become crucial at such speeds. Even small issues that may not be significant at conventional railway speeds can have much greater consequences when a train is travelling at more than 250 kmph.
Aerodynamics is another major consideration. The train must be designed to move efficiently through the air while also managing sudden changes in air pressure, particularly when passing through tunnels or meeting other trains.
High-speed motors, braking systems and software are key
India’s move into high-speed rail manufacturing will require expertise across several advanced technologies.High-powered propulsion systems will be needed to accelerate and maintain high speeds, while sophisticated control software will have to coordinate the train’s systems safely and efficiently.
Advanced braking technology will be another critical component. At 280 kmph, stopping a train requires significantly greater control and engineering precision than bringing a conventional train to a halt.
Crash safety, suspension technology, aerodynamics and passenger comfort will also have to be integrated into a single train design.
This makes the B-28 project an important learning curve for India as it seeks to develop a complete high-speed rail manufacturing capability.
India plans 350 kmph bullet trains next
The 280 kmph trainsets are only the first stage of India’s high-speed rail manufacturing ambitions.Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated that the next generation of bullet trains will be developed for speeds of up to 350 kmph.
Sources have also indicated that aluminium trainsets are being considered for trains operating at speeds above 300 kmph. If manufactured domestically, such trains would represent another major technological milestone for India’s rail industry.
The shift from stainless steel to lighter aluminium-based trainsets could help engineers address the demands associated with even higher speeds.
Seven more bullet train corridors planned
India’s high-speed rail ambitions extend well beyond the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor.The Union Budget has announced seven additional high-speed rail corridors, potentially creating a much larger market for domestically manufactured bullet trains.
The proposed corridors include:
- Mumbai-Pune — 48 minutes
- Pune-Hyderabad — 1 hour 55 minutes
- Hyderabad-Bengaluru — 2 hours
- Hyderabad-Chennai — 2 hours 55 minutes
- Chennai-Bengaluru — 1 hour 13 minutes
- Delhi-Varanasi — 3 hours 50 minutes
- Varanasi-Siliguri via Patna — 2 hours 55 minutes
