Baiyappanahalli Coaching Terminal delayed again
Located about two kilometres away from Baiyappanahalli railway station, the first phase of the city’s third coaching terminal includes construction of three platforms and two stabling lines.
“The first phase will be complete in June next year,” Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani, who was in the city and inspected the project site on Monday, told ET. The Railways is targeting completion of the second phase by December 2019, he said.
Located about two kilometres away from Baiyappanahalli railway station, the first phase of the city’s third coaching terminal includes construction of three platforms and two stabling lines. Under the second phase, SWR plans to construct four platforms and three stabling lines.
As per the original plan, the project was supposed to be ready in December, but this was later pushed to March 2019.
“We have achieved good progress in the civil works. As signalling and telecommunication works are time-consuming, there was some delay. We will be able to meet the fresh deadline,” a senior Railways official said.
The third terminal at Baiyappanahalli will be as big as the Yesvantpur terminal in terms of the total number of platforms and pipelines. KSR railway station has 10 platforms and the Yesvantpur station has six.
The new terminal will also facilitate the introduction of additional suburban services, which were considered difficult due to space constraints at the two existing terminals.
Currently, about 150 trains depart or originate at KSR railway station, while the Yesvantpur station caters to 95 trains daily. SWR plans to divert at least 15 long-distance trains from these two terminals to the Baiyappanahalli terminal.
