Assocham urges Railways to modernise stations on PPP model

The move is aimed to make Indian railways at par with international level, on the line of airports, the chamber said in a statement.

NEW DELHI: Industry body Assocham urged the Railway Ministry to modernise and upgrade 100 railway stations in metros and pilgrimage sites on public-private partnership basis in the next fiscal.

The move is aimed to make Indian railways at par with international level, on the line of airports, the chamber said in a statement.

"Conditions of most of railway stations in Northern and Western zone need immediate modernisation... so that these are made of world-class standard," Assocham President Venugopal Dhoot said in a communication to Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.

The move would also act as a revenue earning resource, he added.

Dhoot said railways can increase revenue generation if it leases out at least 100 railway stations for modernisation to private players through a competitive bidding process.

He said the ministry could also set up multi-storeyed complexes with shopping and entertainment facilities at the existing railway stations across the country.
